A Message from NOW-NYS President Lois J. Shapiro-Canter, Esq.

Women spend two-thirds more money on out-of-pocket health care costs than men. That’s right! Although women constitute the majority of health care system users, we pay sixty-eight percent more, as a proportion of our incomes, than do men. It is also women who most frequently use health-care services for children and aging parents.

Although women make up the majority of our population, our specific needs are often overlooked in public policy debates, because male life-cycle and employment patterns are consistently used as the standard. That is why the National Organization for Women-New York State is presenting the Millennium Summit: To Your Health! to showcase New York State’s women and their health-related needs. Our workshop schedule is expansive and covers many long-standing health care concerns impacting women. The following statistics are the inspiration for our Millennium Summit: To Your Health!

This last point about contraception and reproduction brings us to our Keynote Speaker, Sarah Weddington. Ms. Weddington successfully argued the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision recognizing abortion as a Constitutional right. It is an honor and pleasure to have her as our Keynote Speaker.

Plan on attending the NOW-NYS Millennium Summit: To Your Health! We guarantee you will return home a better leader, inspired and prepared to empower the larger community of women.
