A Message from NOW-NYS President Lois J. Shapiro-Canter, Esq.

Women spend two-thirds more money on out-of-pocket health care costs than men. That’s right! Although women constitute the majority of health care system users, we pay sixty-eight percent more, as a proportion of our incomes, than do men. It is also women who most frequently use health-care services for children and aging parents.

Although women make up the majority of our population, our specific needs are often overlooked in public policy debates, because male life-cycle and employment patterns are consistently used as the standard. That is why the National Organization for Women-New York State is presenting the Millennium Summit: To Your Health! to showcase New York State’s women and their health-related needs. Our workshop schedule is expansive and covers many long-standing health care concerns impacting women. The following statistics are the inspiration for our Millennium Summit: To Your Health!

• Over 4 million women of color lack health insurance
• Hispanic women are the most likely to be uninsured
• Five million young adult women have no insurance at all
• Many single parents remain completely uninsured, even though they are exactly whom Medicaid is supposed to target
• Women are disproportionately impacted by misdiagnosis and failure to diagnose medical conditions
• Much of the health-cost gender gap is a result of contraceptive needs
