Women of Color and Allies Conference Peg Morris
On April 8, Sioux Taylor and I attended the Women of Color and Allies Conference at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. Speakers included Dr. Dolores Fernandez, president of Hostos Community College; Margarita Lopez, a former New York City Council member; Rosalba Polanco, director of a family center and child care network and president of Bronx NOW (the first and only Spanish-speaking chapter); and Zenaida Mendez, National NOW director of Racial Diversity Programs. The speakers at the conference stressed educational initiatives, such as health education for newly arrived immigrant women and education on domestic violence. In addition, the talks emphasized the need for unrelenting political advocacy and pressure in today’s hostile political climate.
