Reflections on The March for Women's Lives

Sioux Taylor

To paraphrase the words of Albert Einstein, nothing we can do will change the structures of the universe. However, maybe, by raising our voices and working together, we can help to make social justice a reality in our time. This is what I had in mind when I joined in and marched for women's lives on April 25 in Washington DC

In order to leave New York and travel with the Westchester County group, I had to set my alarm clock for 3:30 a.m., leave my house at 4:30 a.m. and arrive at the White Plains Bloomingdale's parking lot at 5 a.m. This contingent was among the about 2,000 Westchester residents who marched! It was awesome to know a total of more than 1 million people participated.

For me, the march was an absolute "turn-on" experience! Cross-generational and ethnically diverse, people came in wheelchairs and on crutches. They came riding bikes and on battery-powered scooters. Together with ordinary "shoe-leather walkers," all were united and of one accord as we advocated for women's rights and social justice.

The collegiality of the undaunted commitment to make a difference was surely inspiring! Clearly, there was and is no intention of allowing the clock to be turned back to the pre-Roe vs. Wade days.

We will not go gently into the woods and let the fundamental right of women to control their own bodies be compromised or denied by Supreme Court justices, legislators or the President of the United States.

The right of a woman to use contraceptives, terminate a pregnancy and have access to reproductive health services without intrusion of government is not negotiable! We will keep the pressure on!
