More than 850,000 Turn Out for The March for Women's Lives
Reflections by Luba Fineson
Yes, the March for Women's Lives was thrilling. There was a much higher percentage of young women than at any previous national women's issues march I have been on. It looks like we may be able to pass the torch to this generation. They may be tired of rampant consumerism and want something more important for themselves. They were virulently anti-Bush.
A group of 100 young women (and two young men) were at our hotel for a Hillel conference and the March. They proudly pointed to their chartreuse t-shirts that read, "This is what a Jewish Feminist looks like." Audrey Poole and I pointed to ourselves and said, "This is what a 70-plus feminist looks like."
Two Michigan coeds wore t-shirts that said "Michigan © Vaginas." My two favorite signs were "Walking the talk in April, Voting the walk in November" and "Hey cowboy, my body is my ranch. Keep out."
People applauded like made for Hillary Clinton. There sure are a lot of people who would like to see her as president. So far she says not this time.
One man dressed in boxer shorts brought a rubber dummy named George Bush that anyone could punch.
Westchester NOW Planning Committee member Beth Levy had planned to go to the march with her mother, husband and children. Sadly, Beth's mother, a strong feminist, passed away two weeks before the march. Beth and her daughter Melaina dedicated themselves to march in honor of Beth's mother.
There was a great feeling of camaraderie, everyone talking about where they came from and their support for abortion and contraception. It was an inspiring time and great to be home Sunday night, tired but exhilarated.
