PAID FAMILY LEAVE IN NEW YORK?
Jon Wegienek
The NYS Paid Family Leave Coalition, of which Westchester NOW is a member, is planning its legislative strategy to bring paid leave to the working families of New York this year. The proposed legislation would expand our state's Temporary Disability Insurance program to provide a modest wage replacement for employees who need time to care for newborns or adopted children, or to tend to their own or their family's health problems.
After having spent six years laying the groundwork for passage of this bill, members of the coalition believe that approval could happen this year. Encouraging responses from the governor's office have been received, fueling our optimism that New York could become the second state in the nation to provide this important family benefit.
