Reflections on NOW's Stand at the Station
Sioux Taylor, Action Vice-President On Monday, January 22, I was one of those who participated in the highly successful stand at the White Plains Railroad Station, which Westchester NOW sponsored to celebrate the anniversary of Roe v Wade. The purpose was to commemorate women who died or were maimed because of illegal abortions and to rededicate our efforts to provide unrestricted access to contraception and abortion for all women. President Bush's "bush-league" effort to bushwhack reproductive freedom for women is totally unacceptable. A woman's right to an abortion is a personal and private matter and in no way falls within the jurisdiction of our executive, judicial or legislative leaders -- most of whom are men. The vast majority of the commuters we saw at the White Plains Railroad Station not only accepted and read the literature that we passed out but readily signed and returned to us the post cards (which we mailed to the President) objecting to the appointment of John Ashcroft as U.S. Attorney General. On the other hand, I was outraged when I read the little news article about our stand that appeared in the Journal News on January 23rd - "Abortion Foes Mark Roe v Wade Anniversary" (in Washington). The Westchester NOW Roe v Wade Action was tagged onto the end of an article headlined 'Abortion Foes.' How misleading to lump the NOW pro-choice action with news about anti-abortion activities. The Journal News should be ashamed of itself for such low-level, inappropriate coverage. Clearly, in Westchester there is vast popular support for the pro-choice position. In my judgment, the Journal News should get on board.¨
