Westchester NOW Summer Solstice

Westchester NOW members meeting

Westchester NOW members met on May 12, 2009, at Panera Bread in Scarsdale to prepare the mailing for our chapter's June election and Solstice Party and to discuss current items of interest. Topics also included the upcoming national NOW election in Indianapolis, the NYCLU's community service award to Westchester NOW Past President, Zelle Andrews, sexual harassment of Harrison's Town Supervisor, and various pending federal legislation impacting women's struggle for equality. We look forward to seeing everyone on June 19th at the Chapter Election and Solstice Party and hope you'll volunteer to serve as an officer or committee chair for the upcoming year. The White House Project's Lifetime Achievement Award to NYS Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye (ret.)

I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Lilly Ledbetter last night at the annual awards dinner for The White House Project. Lilly and Senator Gillibrand were presenting The White House Project's Lifetime Achievement Award to NYS Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye (ret.).

We had a chance to speak during the dinner and then afterwards we were able, together, to speak with Chief Judge Kaye. I wanted to share the photo a friend took of Lilly and me.

March 17, 2009 Westchester NOW Membership Meeting

Westchester NOW members gathered on March 17, 2009, at Panera Bread in Scarsdale for fellowship at the chapter's membership meeting. Topics of discussion included notice of a coalition that has formed to support enactment of alimony or maintenance guidelines for application in divorce actions, recent chapter activities, including the Women's History Month panel and slide show on Sex, Stereotypes and Beauty, as well as upcoming events such as the national conference and our chapter's Summer Solstice gathering to be held this June.

Pioneer of Justice and Equality for Women and the Law Award

Westchester NOW planning committee members, Susan Damplo and Wendy Wild, attended the Pace Law School Pioneer of Justice and Equality for Women and the Law Award ceremony on Saturday, March 14, 2009. This year's recipient was Professor Margaret L. Satterthwaite, Faculty Director of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at NYU School of Law, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Law of the the International Human Rights Clinic. Prof. Satterthwaite spoke eloquently of her human rights work in Haiti and Northern Ireland, and around the globe, of her efforts on behalf of those persecuted on the basis of their sexual orientation. Pace Law School Dean, Michelle Simon, introduced the honoree, on behalf of the Women's Association of Law Students, which presented the award. Dean Simon is the third female dean of the law school. She spoke passionately about the need for a women's association of law students as well as the need for vigilance throughout society and the importance of recognizing pioneers for women such as Prof. Satterthwaite so long as women's equality remains a theory rather than an reality.

Women's History Month event NOW Program for WCC - March 5, 2009

A reception was held on March 14, 2009, at the Sheldrake Environmental Center in Larchmont, New York, for longtime Westchester NOW member and women's rights activist, Hilda Green Demsky. The Center is hosting Ms. Demsky's art exhibition entitled, The Lure of the Land. New York State Assemblymember, George Latimer, attended the reception. He and Ms. Demsky are before Ms. Demsky's work entitled, A Time for Every Season Snow Banks at Sheldrake. Among those also attending were several Westchester NOW members, including Susan Damplo and Beth Levy.
