Westchester NOW-PAC ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS

FOR NYS SENATE AND ASSEMBLY RACES

The Westchester NOW Political Action Committee evaluated state assembly and senate candidates.  The candidates were evaluated based on their support for and leadership on NOW’s core issues:  support for reproductive rights, a constitutional equality amendment, and lesbian and gay civil rights; protection and justice for survivors of domestic violence, rape, and sexual abuse; equal opportunity regardless of sex, race, origin, religion, mental or physical disability, age or sexual orientation; economic equity for all.

Senate

34        Jeffrey Klein
35        Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Nicholas Spano **
36        Ruth Hassell-Thompson
37        Suzi Oppenheimer

Assembly

87        James Gary Pretlow
88        Amy Paulin
89        Adam Bradley
90        Sandra Galef
91        George Latimer
92        Richard Brodsky

** The decision to endorse both candidates in the 35th Senate District is based on the following:

Nicholas Spano, the incumbent, is a pro-Choice Republican who has consistently supported our issues.  In his established position in the Senate, he has been a leader for the rights of women, the poor, and gays and lesbians, even when such his positions have offended some of his Republican colleagues.  We applaud his courage and support his re-election.

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, in her fifth term on the Westchester County legislature, has distinguished herself as one of its most influential voices.  She authored the   County’s first Human Rights laws and has been an outspoken advocate for the rights of women and the disadvantaged.  And, as a woman, an African American, and a Democrat, Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ election to the NYS Senate would bring a welcome change to that legislative body.   We support her candidacy and celebrate her leadership.
